Veils
Music and lyrics by J Stephen Roberts
When you step out
Beneath the evening pale
Wreaths and streaming veils
Hanging in the churchyard
Lies dreaming on the ground
Petals in her hair
I don’t recall just where
So long ago we were here
Return to the grass
Where you walked when your feet were new
The sky goes dusky blue
Here she was walking with me
These things all gone to stone
Are wax as the hills grow old
A body in the earth is cold
Somehow the flicker burns still
This place she should know
These halls were where she walked
Moves through doors all locked
The house is filled with strangers
Her hours here are years
When she calls out their names
Her voice is out of phase
Leaves scattered on the gray lawn
Walk with me past these rocks
To where the river’s flow runs out
So still I hear my doubts
Hunting a pathway home again
Hands on the clock they slow
This moment lingers here
Tomorrow disappears
What I am is here today alone
