Scattered Leaves
Music and lyrics by J Stephen Roberts
Morning cold around the house
Dreams forgotten after bed
And I was lying in the darkened depths
In the human experiment
Somebody was watching us
From the spaces in between the grass
But it was only light from a dead star
Sleep well tonight at last
And so I call
Into the silent midnight
Lost echoed voice
Is vibrating away like this
In drifted hard loneliness
I have woken up again
In your white trembling arms
But it was only when I touched your face
Gray stillness of the dawn
What is this we are within?
Yellow leaves are on the yard
And we walk together everyday
And another day is gone
And oh, but doll
We might be in each other
Love like rain
Is coming down in a wild haze
To clear the sky and fade away
Heaven in a history book
How did they remember that?
And I have listened to what they explain
I have heard the frightened words
We know everything now
Truth defended dauntlessly
But when the blood has run into the lake
It is only what we believe
And oh, I’m lost
I do not pretend to grasp
Always alone
Feeling every breath of wind
To turn and walk back home again
